Greenacres Netball League
The Greenacres Netball League evolved in 2001 from an unrecognised League operating in Beckenham, Kent. It was played indoors on a carpet surface. The courts were not the correct size, the netting around the court was still in play and skilful players could use this to advance play. Basically Netball was being played but could not actually be classified as the recognised game. The Kent County Netball Development Officer and the nearest local Leagues were aware of the activity but could not get involved. When the landlord decided to sell the site to developers he purchased the site in Warlingham and offered a lease to enable existing business to continue. Thus we were able to move the indoor league and create the “Greenacres Netball League”. Obviously, some teams found the relocation too far to travel and the League was reduced from approximately 20 teams to 16. We gradually built up to 32 teams in 4 Divisions. Over time this has fluctuated and we operate with 18 teams in 2019/20 with three Divisions on three courts.
During the Covid-19 situation we reviewed our set-up, taking into account comments from our players, and from July 2021 will be operating on two outside and one inside court at Coombe Wood School, Croydon.
The aim of this League is to provide an opportunity for people to participate in the sport at any level or ability and take part in Netball in a friendly, competitive and social atmosphere. Some players have not played for a while and just want to return find it less intimidating. We also offer a link for players/teams to progress, if they wish, to a higher standard as they grow more confident in their play. We have even had a player talent spotted for the Surrey County!
We are keen to provide progressive links with the local Croydon Netball League and players are now integrating to play in that League on a Saturday and Evening Leagues operated on a Monday & Thursday plus the Spring and Summer League played centrally at Shirley High School.
We play continuously throughout the year on Tuesday evenings. There is a Registration Fee of £14 for each new schedule and teams pay £35.00 per game, which is payable prior to the game.
All players are required to be members of England Netball following an introductory period if they have either never been or have not been a member within the past three years. Everyone else is expected to pay their EN membership prior to 1st September annually.
Teams have attended meetings where the Rules of the League and the game, were explained, some players have not played for a while! The benefits of membership of England Netball are stressed, especially with regard to the insurance cover, which is included in their membership.
England Netball has been very supportive of what we are trying to achieve with the Greenacres League.
We are an ideal environment to offer mentoring support umpire who would like to become qualified. Over the past few seasons more than fifteen people have passed their Umpiring “C” Award. We welcome anyone who would like to be trained. Give the number below a call and we will put you in touch with the relevant people. You can learn in a non-intimating environment as we have players of all standards and abilities to test your knowledge, observation and application of the rules.
We run Skills Day, Holiday Courses and Junior activities. These are all run in accordance with England Netball Strategy.
We want to encourage active lifestyles for all the family.
If you live in or around Croydon or surrounding areas of Surrey and would like to play, you don’t have to have a team, please call
